SEEKING ADVICE ABOUT YEARLY GOALS

by Judy
(PA, USA)

At the start of each new school year, I try to write out a brief summary of what my goals are for each of my children. I have them help me in that they can suggest their own PERSONAL goals as well.

My question is this:

When you finish a certain textbook or lesson plan/syllabus or Unit Study that you have focused on for the year, what do you do?
Do you accept that as a "finished subject" for the year and be done with it or do you find new things to pursue in that area?

For instance, several of my children have finished their handwriting and spelling books for the year...two have finished their English books...and two more have finished history books.

Part of me wants to say "WOO HOO, GOOD FOR YOU! We're done with that subject for the year" and part of me thinks we should find new things to study to keep the subject going. I've also considered that if I drop that finished subject, we could have more time to pursue something more like an elective form of study.

So...what are your thoughts? How do you handle this at home? What do you suggest for us?

(THANKS, ahead of time!)
