Questionnaire to Help Choose Classroom Style

Below is a questionnaire to help you choose a classroom style that is right for your family. This classroom style survey is meant to give you an overview of some common ways that homeschooling families like to "set up shop".

Before the questionnaire, you will find a list of each“style” of homeschool classroom that we’ve presented. Next to each one is a corresponding number. The questions each have multiple choice answers; simply circle one answer per question. You’ll notice under each answer choice is also a corresponding number. After you answer ALL the questions, look at the numbers under each item you have circled. (These numbers coincide with the list.) If you find that you have several of one number, then you might wish to consider that particular type homeschool classrooms for your family!

1) All Around the House

2) Kitchen Table

3) Classroom on the Go

4) Living Room Learners

5) Classroom Set Aside

1) How important is a formal structure to your lessons?

(circle one)

very important 5

important 2 5

not that important1 4

not important at all 3

2) Do you have space to create an area that has been set aside specifically to be a classroom?

yes 5

no 1 3 4

maybe 2 5

3) Does your family learn best as a group, or when you all do our work in your own private areas?

best as a group 2 4 5

best in our own private areas1 3

a little of both 2 5

note: (circling “a little of both” can mean perhaps that a room set aside works well, with the ability to allow students to go to their rooms, or the living room when they need independent study time uninterrupted…this is what my own family does)

4) How much do you enjoy seeing all of your school items, decorations, artwork displays, desks, etc…all around you when you work?

Very much, it helps us focus 5 and perhaps 2

we enjoy it but wouldn’t really miss it 1 2 4

we don’t find it necessary 3

1) All Around the House

2) Kitchen Table

3) Classroom on the Go

4) Living Room Learners

5) Classroom Set Aside

5) Do you see a difference in your child’s efforts/abilities when you have them do their lessons in a certain room that is set aside, as opposed to when you permit them to carry out their work at the kitchen table or on the couch?

Yes, I see a big difference 5

No, my child stays focused no matter the location1 2 3 4

6) How important is it to you to stay home during school hours?

very important, we don’t leave the house until our lessons are complete1 2 4 5

important, but we are flexible and don’t mind taking school with us when needed1 2 3 4 5

not important, and, in fact, we enjoy being out and about the community all day 3

7) Do you find it difficult to keep papers and supplies organized when you do not have a certain room set aside for that purpose?

YES, very difficult! 5

somewhat difficult, but I can work with a tote bin here or there 1 2 4

not difficult at all, I thrive on clutter…it might be messy, but I KNOW where everything is! 1 2 3 4

8) Are your children self-motivated and independent workers?

yes 1 3

sometimes 2 4

no5

9) (If applicable): Does your husband mind having school things mixed in with the living areas in your home?

no, he doesn’t mind at all1 2 3 4

a little, he’d like things more organized2 3 5

yes, he wants it separate 5

10) Do you, as a teacher, function well when class is in the “regular” rooms of the house or on the go…or do you become distracted and anxious?

I can teach in any setting 1 2 3 4

I get distracted when I’m too close to the kitchen or thinking about chores1 3 5

I prefer to be surrounded by a school setting in order to keep my focus on our lessons 5

Compile your answer numbers and compare to the list. Does it seem that you have gravitated toward one certain style of classroom?Or, perhaps, is it clear that you have a few choices available?

There are most likely more questions which you can add in order to clarify your decision.Which ever room you choose, remember that there is no “right” or “wrong”…choose the way thatbest fits your unique and special family!
