How important are field trips?

by Angela
(Martinsburg, WV)

I would like to get some thoughts on how field trips play a part in the home school atmosphere. How do you measure the value of it in terms of the time it takes to go on field trips, the time away from the classroom and the expense? Are there any lines you draw on these areas? Is that flexible depending on how everything else in life is running? Are field trips a priority for academics? Do you use field trips to get in those extra things, like going to a farm? Can you give some examples of field trips where you really benefited, or you learned from a mistake. Thanks so much!
