A Homeschool-Mothers Health is a TOP PRIORITY!
As far as nourishing her intellect, a homeschool-mothers health is key to her ability to stay on top of things in her family's daily lessons! Ok ladies! Let's all shout out our Pythagorean Theorem: "The sum of the squares of the legs of a right triangle is equal to the square of the hypotenuse"!!! LOUDER! LOUDER! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!! (By the way, the Scarecrow blurts out a version of this in the beloved classic film "The Wizard of Oz"...but what HE says is actually incorrect!)
Juuuuuuussst KIDDING!
Alright...lest we frighten away all of those poor moms who shrivel
up and cry at the very THOUGHT of a Pythagorean Theorem...that
little exercise was all in fun! You DO NOT NEED TO BE ABLE TO DO
THAT IN ORDER TO TEACH YOUR HIGH SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN AT HOME!!!
(Repeat that last line THREE TIMES please!) A homeschool-mothers
overall health IS crucial, however, to the peace and harmony
of the home.
It IS important to nourish this in an intellectual aspect, and
here are several easy ways to do that:
1) READ! Any time you get the chance...READ! Allow yourself a
little time to read a wide genre of books. Are there classics you
missed out on back in your own school days? Why not read them
now?
One such book for me was Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment" so
I decided to tackle that this year...reading a little bit here
and there as time allowed! Was it necessary? No. But it sure
felt good to accomplish this task and I know that it exercised
my mind!
What should you read to benefit your Homeschooling-mothers-
intellectual health?
A) Pre-read the books that are on your students' reading lists
for the year.
This allows you to be prepared for questions and
discussions when the time comes.
B) Learn something new!
Is there something you wonder about? How
its made? How its done? Who invented it? FIND OUT! Read about
topics that interest you for the sheer pleasure of learning
something that you didn't already know! As for the
homeschool-mothers intellectual health, there's no such
thing as learning "too much".
C) Read for inspiration!
This not only feeds the mind, but the
soul as well! Read the books of your faith, read Scripture,
or simply read some good blogs or websites (like this one,
hopefully!)...Taking a few moments to absorb the thoughts of
others and gain some different perspectives is a great way
to keep alert and nourish your capacity to think and analyze.
2) Brain teasers, riddles, and other games that use the mind.
Sounds silly to some, but these are EXCELLENT ways to exercise
your intellect and keep your brain in tip-top shape.
A homeschool-mothers intellectual health is well attended to
if she is willing to take on the challenge of solving these
types of problems! Sodoku, Crossword, Wordsearch, Riddles of the
Day, etc...Just a few times a week is all it takes to energize
your mind...and it helps you to keep up with your kids!
3) Audio books and lectures: While you are out exercising your
body, taking a walk or a hike...or while you are kicking back
to relax and refresh in the comfort of your home...listening to
books or lectures on audiotape is a super-easy way to nourish your
intellectual health! There are a plethora of audio books available
from a variety of sources. Take advantage of this and NOURISH
YOUR MIND TODAY! Every homeschool-mothers mind can be strengthened
through the art of good listening skills!
4) WRITE!!! When was the last time you put your thoughts down
on paper? I'm not talking about using a computer (although if that
is your preferred means of writing most of the time...that's ok
too...at least you are writing). However, I'm referring to the
good ol' pen and paper style of writing. There is something in
the process of taking the thoughts from your mind and sending them
through the pen to the paper that is lacking when we are merely
pounding away the keys of our computer. Write a letter to a
friend! Write a letter to your spouse! Write a letter to each
of your students! ( I write a letter to each of my children in
their planners at the start of every school year) Write a letter
to GOD! Keep a journal...anything goes...just WRITE...and hold
yourself accountable to the same grammar/punctuation and writing
mechanics rules to which you hold your students! IT'S GOOD
PRACTICE!
5) MEMORIZE! Oh, no you don't!!! Don't click that X to leave just
because I said that!!! ::smile::
Truly,the intellectual needs of a homeschool-mothers health
can greatly benefit from the act of memorization. Whether
you memorize
Scripture verses, prose, tongue twisters, rhymes, or Great
speeches of significant speakers in history,(how about Abraham
Lincoln's Gettysburg Address?)... the point is, that
stretching ourselves beyond the usual limit will work the
"muscles" of our mind the same way that adding a few extra
sit-ups or laps around the track will work the muscles of our
body. And what better way to inspire your children in their
memorization assignments, than to be able to give them a
presentation of your own! Better yet, have a contest to see
who can memorize the Preamble of your nation's Consitution
or all of the verses to your country's anthem!
Start today to nourish your mind right along with your body
and soul! Your family is depending on you to stay healthy.
The peace, harmony, and success of your homeschool program
depends upon it.
